A Brief History of The Nut House
The Nut House was the first to obtain an Oklahoma State Health Department license as a grower to sell pecans to the public. We first opened over 40 years ago selling only native pecans harvested from the backyard grove of the founders, Robert and Margie Peterson.
With help from friends and neighbors, the Petersons built the original cabin part of the building in 1973 using entirely pecan logs gathered from the property. The little cabin was used to house the pecan cracking operation and included a small retail space to sell native pecans.
Then in 1974 the current grove of paper shell pecan trees was purchased, giving customers even more varieties of pecan to choose from.
The cracking shack was moved in 1979 to its present, more accessible location along historic Highway Route 66.
In 1982 the Peterson family was named Pecan Growers of the Year by the Oklahoma Pecan Growers Association.
